FIRST WORDS 1 WELCOME TO FEBRUARY’S 53 DEGREES With a new website to look forward to and our new membership campaigns kicking in, it promises to be another busy year here at the UK’s largest Chamber, as we look to develop and build on the great progress made in the last few years. WELCOME TO the first issue of 53 Degrees for 2017 – a year that promises to be just as intriguing, challenging and, some would say, as exciting as 2016. I said in December’s First Words that I hoped everyone would get a chance for some rest over Christmas and New Year. I’m not sure about you but after the familiar first week back “lull” after New Year, things have ramped right up and I can honestly say we’ve never been busier! With a new website to look forward to and our new membership campaigns kicking in, it promises to be another busy year here at the UK’s largest Chamber, as we look to develop and build on the great progress made in the last few years. And this year promises change on a major scale with Brexit and the mayoral election in May dominating things at present – more of which you can read about in Clive’s column on page 10 and Wayne’s Words on page 16. Whatever your views on either subject, it is important that you get involved. We still get people saying nobody asks us about this, well now is your chance over the coming months to play your part in these big issues that will have an impact on your business in one way or another. Look out for more information over the coming weeks. Our 2017 events programme is now in full swing – with attendances up again so far this year with many selling out within days of opening up booking. The Annual Dinner takes place this year on 18th May again at the Victoria Warehouse and we have a few new twists on some of our other events too this year, so there really has never been a better time to get involved with the Chamber. Till next month. Chris Chris Fletcher, Marketing & Policy Director at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce
