If ever there was one key question to ask someone preparing to pitch a business idea it’s this. Who are you pitching to?

Because there are always going to be several parties you’d pitch an idea to. Investors. Clients or Customers. Sponsors. Employees. Suppliers. Take your pick.

Although the core of what you’re talking about is the same business idea, how people look at it is determined by their perspective, not yours. Therefore, before getting carried away by your enthusiasm for what you are trying to sell, the first step is to recognise that every stakeholder has their own perspective. They each have different reasons to be interested or engaged and therefore considering how they will look at you, will help you to choose what to talk about and how to pitch.

The move from drawing board to reality is, to take a current buzzword, a journey. But that journey is not a voyage into the unknown. Quite the opposite. It is a journey through the known, because you know what you’re talking about. What you need to do is have a plan, so you are clear in your own mind what you want to communicate and why this is what your client needs to know and how knowing it is going to help you drive sales.
